How to get a motorcycle licence

If you feel the time has come to graduate from four wheels to two, you’ll need to secure a motorcycle licence. The process is not dissimilar to getting your car licence, and requires you to demonstrate an understanding of road rules and laws, both in theory and in practice. Now, while things differ slightly state to state, the basic process is the same. Therefore, below are some general guidelines to get you on your way. Best visit your state’s government pages for more details.

  1. The first step you must take to become a bikie is to get your learners permit. To do this, you must be 18 years of age, be a resident of the state in which you intend to get your licence, and pass a few tests. Much like getting your car learner’s permit, really.
  2. The tests you must undertake include an eyesight test and a paper based learner’s permit knowledge.
  3. All things going well, you’ll receive your learner’s permit and be ready to start logging practical hours.
  4. After a designated amount of time (again, can vary state to state, but roughly three months) you are now eligible to go for your motorcycle licence (this is, of course, assuming you haven’t lost your learner’s permit in this stretch of time). You will be required to undergo another eye test, and a practical assessment. Some states also require a Hazard Perceptions test, however this is not required if you already hold a valid driver’s licence.
  5. Enjoy your days riding down the highway with the wind in your hair. Oh, and invest in quality leathers.
