How to purchase car insurance

Car insurance is the least sexy aspect of car ownership. Sure, we’re all eager to put in the hard yards when it comes to finding the car of our dreams, but when faced with the admin stages, it’s only too easy to put it all into the too hard basket. However, car insurance is not something you should brush aside, as it protects not only yourself, but your car and your passengers. Therefore, it is definitely worth taking the time to properly consider all your options and find a policy that best suits you.

 

  1. First and foremost: shop around. There are that many insurance companies out there all offering slighting different plans at sometimes very different prices. Compare at least three insurers, and find the plan that best suits your personal situation.
  2. Look for insurers that specialise in policies for young drivers. Since young driver's statistically pay a lot more than all other road users for their insurance, it's good to go with someone who really understands your situation.
  3. Know the difference between policy types, namely Third party property insurance, Third party, fire and theft insurance, and Comprehensive insurance
  4. Keep in mind that the fancier the car, the more expensive the cover is likely to be.
  5. Most importantly, drive safely and keep a clean record, and this will keep your premiums down. Makes sense when you think about it.
